Sylwia Ptasinska, associate professor of physics and an ND Energy faculty affiliate, was recently named an editor-in-chief for European Physical Journal D (EPJD) effective January 2020. She has served on the journal’s editorial board since 2015.

EPJ is a joint publication by EDP Sciences, the Società Italiana di Fisica, and Springer. It was founded in 1998 as a merger and continuation of Acta Physica Hungarica, Anales de Fisica, Czechoslovak Journal of Physics, Fizika A, Il Nuovo Cimento, Journal de Physique, Portugaliae Physica and Zeitschrift für Physik.

EPJD covers topics related to atomic, molecular, optical and plasma physics. Ptasinska is responsible for the plasma section of the journal.

A member of the Notre Dame faculty since 2010, Ptasinska’s research focuses on a wide range of studies on low-energy electron spectroscopy of gas-phase molecules, gas phase-solid interfacial processes, and plasma physics and chemistry.  Though her laboratory’s experimental investigations address fundamental questions, the group’s goal is to apply this research in areas such as energy, medicine and industry.

Ptasinska also serves on the editorial board of the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) journal. She received the Rev. Edmund P. Joyce, C.S.C., Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching in 2019.
