Joseph DeRisi, Ph.D.
Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco; Co-President of the Chan Zuckerberg BIOHUB
Dr. DeRisi received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Stanford University in 1999. He subsequently joined the University of California, San Francisco as an Assistant Professor. He is now Professor at UCSF and co-Chair of the Chan Zuckerberg Hub. His many accolades include the MacArthur Foundation ‘Genius’ Award and election to the National Academy of Sciences. He is famous for many ‘firsts’, beginning with the first printing of genome expression arrays as a graduate student, followed by pioneering differential gene expression in cancer cells, malaria parasites and for virus discovery including SARS. He has made amazing discoveries tracking disease from mammals to insects that have been widely shared through his commitment to Open Access. Most recently, he transformed his research laboratory to CLIA approved status for testing COVID-19 in eight days, provides prolific testing for underserved populations and a model for the academy in a pandemic.
The goal of the Clinical Translational Seminar Series 2020-2021 is to provide a forum to discuss topics that impact the lives of patients with rare and neglected diseases in the 21st century. We hope learn about ground breaking solutions as we train students and fellows as next generation leaders.
